The opportunities to grow Africa’s blue economy are vast.
38 out of 55 countries in the African Union are coastal countries or islands whose maritime industry is estimated to be worth over US$1 trillion per year.
But for 70% of these coastal countries and islands, their maritime exclusive economic zones are largely under-exploited. The maritime zones under African jurisdiction cover some 13 Million sq km and some 6.5 sq km of continental shelf.
The marine resources of Africa, which contribute to it’s Blue Economy, are yet to be responsibly utilized to foster the economic transformation of a rich yet poor continent in the world.
This is why, Africa Blue Economy Alliance (ABEA) is working to advance the blue economy and sustainable development in the African continent.
The Africa Blue Economy Alliance brings together Blue Economy experts and research partners from across the world with knowledge and skills in Blue Economy which includes: aquaculture, fisheries, tourism, maritime transport, coastal mining, marine renewable energy, marine engineering and shipping sectors
Through targeted training, consultation and, knowledge sharing by Blue Economy experts and researchers from within and outside Africa Blue Economy Alliance. We are bridging the gap in knowledge for countries, communities, organizations and, partners in the sustainable exploitation and safe management of marine resources and products, and blue economy activities. At the same time developing new Blue Economy opportunities and capabilities for sustainable economic progress and social development in the continent.
